Call for Papers- Do you have a Great Lecture for all to Hear on World Dendrology Day?

On World Dendrology Day we are Announcing the Paul Meyer Lecture Series

In Tribute- A Lecture Series organized by the friends of World Dendrology Day

Called the Paul Meyer Lecturer Series

This series was named in honor of Paul Meyer, an eminent member of the profession of dendrology and who worked at the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania for 43 years, as Executive Director from 1991 - 2019. The intent of the lecture series is: "to foster and promote innovative ideas and approaches in dendrology, to recognize distinguished scholars and to bring their discoveries to a wider audience, and to encourage the development of the science of dendrology so that both professionals and students can enjoy the benefits of a broader perspective."  It is hoped that their collaboration will upscale how dendrology influencers utilize their industry expertise, fostering profound connections with their constituents, especially dendrologists and scientists seeking discovery.

The Lecture is best organized as a pre-recorded audio-video lecture with slides saved and stored to YouTube server.

Celebrating World Dendrology Day along Gandria Trail, Lugano, Switzerland

Celebrating Along The Lugano Gandria Trail

In addition to its great scenic beauty, the Gandria Trail is unique in Switzerland for the variety of plant species found in the area, not surprisingly listed in the Federal Inventory of Landscapes, Sites and Natural Monuments of National Importance. The path is very sunny and boasts a special microclimate (average annual temperature is 12.4°C) that allows the growth of very rare plant species. The recent botanical survey recorded 343 plant species of which 54 are listed as threatened.

Rarities include Campanula bononiensis, Inula spiraeifolia, Peucedanum venetum, Ononis pusilla and Dictamnus albus. Also growing along the trail in the walls of Via Cortivo in Castagnola is Umbilicus rupestris, an endangered species in Switzerland. Also abutting the trail are areas listed in the Federal Inventory of Dry Meadows and Pastures of National Importance.

In order to survive and reproduce, these species need very special conditions; therefore, the maintenance of the trail involves favoring their preservation rather than the aesthetic cleanliness of the area. Examples of valuable trees along the trail include raven pear, laburnum, and hackberry.

The City of Lugano, in collaboration with Edizioni Casagrande, published the Small Flora of The Gandria Trail (Piccola flora del Sentiero di Gandria), the first botanical guide entirely dedicated to one of the most interesting natural areas in Ticino, but also in Switzerland and the Insubric region.

Special Post for World Dendrology Day

'World Dendrology Day' Press Release from Little Friars Arboretum, United Kingdom

"Little Friars Arboretum Press Release,

As the arboretum is primarily a classroom for those interested in learning  about trees rather than showcase, it is looked after on ecological lines with the help of a few volunteers. We generally follow a ‘no mow May’ philosophy but also into June, because there are still flowers blooming. It may even surprise some people that in this Chiltern valley, there can still be ground frosts then. Only the avenues are mown until late June although it is always time to take out brambles, volunteer trees and pernicious perennial weeds like nettles, as well as clearing around new trees. 'Something to do' is listed in the hut on site as volunteers are welcome to come on their own at any time ; perhaps to  enjoy the Shinrin-yoku and familiarize themselves with the trees so they can lead the occasional tour for small groups as parking is limited. Courses can be arranged on request.

On Dendro Day (always the first Sunday in March) is popular as an assembly of a fellowship of those who come to help. Three large conifers were noted needing to  be  felled professionally whilst work was itemized for the ad hoc work parties which are called when the weather is good, sending out ‘the Call’ so those helpers who can attend, do. There is always something to be done, including renewing some of the  labels for the 200 specimen trees.   Each year Buckinghamshire Day 29th July is celebrated on the nearest Sunday by welcoming neighbours and friends to bring a picnic to Little Friars Arboretum whilst we supply cream teas."
